Frankly, the gun debate is a hot, difficult, and loaded (pun intended) topic. People tend to be for it (often very pro second amendment) or against it (thinking that no one should have guns at all), and there seems to be no middle ground in sight… until now. Recently, we have been testing a new surveillance system that might just pave the way for the middle ground in the gun debate!
How a Surveillance System Can Create a Middle Ground in the Gun Debate
Likely, you are reading this and thinking, “Wait! How!?” Well, this new surveillance system uses a new kind of artificial intelligence that will alert security/police forces (depending on the settings) when an individual is in a surveilled area with a pulled gun. Or in other words, individuals who want to carry can, without being flagged or targeted. But the moment an individual actually pulls the gun out of their carrier, the surveillance system will alert all pertinent individuals.
Is This Bulletproof?
- Obviously, since this new system uses technology (which is good but not perfect) and relies on the reaction of human beings (which are, by nature, fallible) no, it is not bulletproof. However, this will greatly help both security and police forces monitor areas without impeding on an individual’s right to carry a gun.
A few of the considerations include:
- Identifying a Gun
The system cannot identify a gun if the barrel is pointed directly at the camera. However, any properly installed surveillance system will have multiple cameras in any given area. Thus, if the gun’s barrel is pointed directly at one camera, the other cameras (if installed properly) will be able to recognize the gun. - Reaction Time
As stated above, this system helps security and police forces identify WHEN a gun is pulled, and thus an individual is ready to use it. That said, the security/police personnel need to have proper training on how to react to situations the moment they are allerted.
Additional Perks
This surveillance system is also designed to help notify security/police personnel when an unusual gathering occurs. What does that mean? Well, say the surveillance system is monitoring an area with high foot traffic. If a brawl were to break out, the system recognizes this as an anomaly because the gathering of people will be different from normal walking and crowds.
Having these types of alerts can greatly help security identify problems, especially when one person has to monitor many screens!
