What are the dangers of private security? Would you put your life at risk?

The role of a security guard is essential for protecting private property and the people who reside or work on the premises they guard. The job requires security guards to be on the front line at all times, as they are the first ones to respond to a situation when danger occurs. Take a recent incident at a homeless shelter in San Antonio, Texas. Two security guards were shot outside of Haven for Hope when a struggle occurred with a man outside the shelter. Though both security guards responded to the suspect appropriately, they were shot amidst the struggle and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Even though security companies focus on proper training for their security guards, dangers always lurk around the corner! So, here are some of the dangers of private security!

Risks Regarding Security Activities - The Danger of Private Security

One of the requirements of security guards is to be constantly on the watch. Sure, not every day is dangerous, but the job requires guards to put their lives on the line to protect the businesses and people that they serve. As a security guard, you never know what will happen next, and when weapons are involved, things could get a lot riskier. BPS Security has identified several of the most common risks associated with security guards:
  • Handling weapons: If guards are required to handle weapons, they must be provided with quality weapons and proper training to avoid injuries or death.
  • Work violence: It’s no secret that security guards risk being attacked. But, workplace violence can also rear its ugly head in other ways. It can include sexual harassment, bullying, and intimidation with the aid of a weapon
  • Work organization risk factors: Inflexible work schedules and assignments that require security guards to work alone can put guards’ health and safety at risk. Not putting proper measures into place can lead to adverse effects on security guards’ health while also increasing the possibility of breaches in safety protocols.

Additional factors such as physical and psychosocial workloads can lead to bodily and mental harm. Stress from work, a lack of motivation, and strained emotional or mental workloads can directly affect the level of protection security guards can offer.
